The Last Bastion - Multimedia

Plan

I will be using my sound for multimedia project, “Last bastion” as an artefact for my graded unit. This specific artefact is very close related to my preferred job role as a sound designer as it shows off my skills using editing, effects, MIDI, collecting sounds and my use of synthesizers to create authentic sounds. In this project I mainly used a large amount of Foley sound effects to create authentic sounds, these sounds are created by nit picking tiny details that aren’t often payed attention to but instead create make a realistic feel for the listener even with sounds that we wouldn’t specifically notice. During the creation of these Foley sounds we have to plan which days we were using the studios and what equipment we were needing to create these sounds, this shows strong time keeping skills and that shows skills of being able to plan ahead of time so that the studio time is not wasted planning what to use which are very important to this role.  The knowledge I’ve gained from my recording and mixing unit helps with my Microphone choice and techniques to record these played a massive role in the creation of Foley sounds in this artefact as the choice of microphone effected how clear the sound would be and also the item I was using to create Foley also helped make the realistic sounds. During the creation of this artefact I focussed on effects and synthesizers, to try and create authentic sounds. I used synthesizers that I had created from other units such as synthesis and sampling to create some of the sounds in this project, showing strong use of file management and effective use of previous work to benefit this project. In addition, I also used a large number of different reverbs on clips to create a naturistic feel for the listener as it is based in the middle of a forest. The ambience played a massive role and showed off my ability to layer sounds and create my own ambient feel. Furthermore, I created my own music track for this project by using my skills gained from the DAW synthesis and sampling unit, and used effective MIDI skills by writing in MIDI and also playing it in constructively using my MIDI keyboard.

Why I Chose this Project

This artefact was initially the one I was most excited to create, due to always showing a massive interest in the cinematic trailers made for games and TV shows where the creators really get a chance to showcase their skills for sound design. Because I really enjoy creating these projects it led to me putting a massive amount of effort especially into the tiny details and once I got started on this project I really wanted to complete it to the best of my ability.

What I was tasked with

I was briefed for this artefact by being asked to choose a piece of media that I thought I was able to complete all the sound for without using any of the original sound. I already knew what I wanted to do before the year started, with a cinematic trailer for a game called Overwatch. The reason I specifically picked an overwatch one was because in the past I had completed a multimedia project on the same game and it really allowed me to showcase my skills in the best way possible whilst also keeping me intrigued because I love the game. Another reason that I chose it was because of the opportunities for Foley sounds, which I believe are one of the most fun parts of creating these projects, using different items and pieces of equipment to make random sounds has always interested me, and shocked me at the sheer amount of sounds you can create from Foley.

Padlet

Before diving into the project, I created a Padlet character sheet in which I went into detail about the following – Video, Theme, Inspiration, Studio Plan, Sound Plan, Challenge, Copyright Statement. Within these I explained my approach to creating the project, why I chose it and what moments of the video I initially thought would be difficult and why.

Music

To start off creating the project I thought I would do the Music first as this plays a big role in the emotional feeling watching the video. I wanted the music to feel happy, to have an upbeat feeling but also to keep you on edge a bit for what is about to happen next. I don’t have much experience in Music and I’m not great at playing any instruments but this didn’t stop me wanting to create my own music for the video. Me creating my own also gave me the freedom to go darker and bring it down an octave at parts where the video starts to become more intense at the beginning.

I chose to use strings and a deep bass in the background to create the naturistic happy feel. To create the bass I used Drift, an Ableton Analog synthesizer which is using a blended tone of 2 different waves, a square wave and a sine wave. To further this, I put a high pass filter on this to cut out the lows below 280hz to give a brighter sound as I didn’t want it to be too dark. I wanted a medium pace attack with a long release so I changed this In the Amp envelope to allow the sound too slowly ring out. Once I had created my sound I added the Scale plugin as I’m not a keyboard player this allowed me to create the synth along with the video without playing any notes off key as it automatically fits them into D Dorian scale.

To create the strings, I used a randomizer to randomize the chords I play whilst also putting them through as G Dorian Scale this time so they still sound great I then put on the Off-world strings found on Ableton’s stock sounds after searching through the library and changed a few settings to make it a bit less bright because it seemed to fit nicely along with the bass. Finally, to complete the strings I added the main part which was my hybrid reverb with a shimmer effect which made it perfect for the ambient cinematic video.

Once I had it all set up I recorded it directly into my project at the same time playing chords whilst watching the video, after review any parts that sounded off I went back and fixed afterwards and the music was completed. Later into my creation of the video I felt something was missing in the music, it needed another element to it so I went through a bunch of different sound libraries and couldn’t find what I needed, I went to YouTube and found a royalty free piano which fits perfectly into my video and gives it that extra feeling of happiness when the cinematic is upbeat.

The reason I chose a royalty free piano is because I’ve learned in skills for business about how copyright is a massive problem within the industry and can lead to legal troubles or losing out on money so I want to make sure all my work is authentic and non-copyright, I want to get into a habit of this before working within the industry.

Foley Sounds

Foley sounds played a massive role in my project, creating Foley really excited me and made my sounds feel authentic when I used different items to create them. Because my video spent a lot of time in nature I wanted to use real items from nature so I gathered leaves, sticks and other random items to create a lot of the sounds of my bird’s movement, landing on different surfaces and manoeuvring around in the video. I had some quite interesting ways to create the sounds of the bird throughout the video. Firstly I set up a microphone using a small diaphragm condenser pencil microphone (AKG c451b) in one of the booths. I’ve learned in my other class that these microphones are really great to use for individual sounds as they’re small in size making them easy to move and use in different spaces especially when doing Foley. I then got my headphone bag  and flapping it around in and out along to the video when the bird was moving, once I had completed that I also recorded individual flying sounds and different ones not to the video in case of any errors as it would be easier to fix. I then inserted a low cut EQ onto the track to cut out any low noises pops or rustling from the headphone bag and It worked out very nicely to create the sound of the bird.

Sound Effects and Ambience

After I had added all my sound effects and my music I began to start balancing the sound, I needed the video to not red line and cause audible distortion in parts of the video where it began to get quite loud. To do this I set the levels of a lot of the tracks lower than 0Db and watched through multiple different times to ensure that it never red lines throughout the video. I used techniques learned within my other class for Recording and Mixing such as getting the best use out of limiters and compressors. Panning really aided me in creating the cinematic and I used automation throughout the video to make the video have a bigger stereo width and improve the clarity of where things are, for example when the bird is flying around the screen you can hear it from ear to ear moving as though you are viewing it in front of you. I added a lot of reverb and EQ throughout this project to different sounds to get it all to feel natural, it had to feel as though it was real in a way and you were in nature listening to parts of it. Ambience played a massive role in creating this feeling and is seen through different parts of the cinematic in multiple areas such as in rain, going through open fields, in the deep forest. For creating the footsteps of bastion I added a drum buss to a sample that I found on SoundQ, this made the footsteps crunchier and heavier, because bastion is such a large robot I needed that lower end to really be brought up so combined with an EQ this helped to make it more realistic.

Bastion Voice

Creating the bastion(robot) voice was also quite a big point in my project as he doesn’t really have a voice so It was difficult to make. Initially I thought it would be fine without the bastion voice but as I got further into creating the project I thought it needed some sort of sound for him even if its subtle. To create his voice, I found a great YouTube video where It showed me how to create the sound using plugins on a different DAW, this helped me find my feet and go in the right direction. I went onto Ableton and created my own version with 3 different voices layered together at different pitches and it worked really well together to create a robot sound. I used a lot of EQ plugins to get the robotic tone along with a ring modulator which I done similar settings to the video to create a metallic texture to the audio. The ring modulator really carries the Sci-fi feeling to this sound, it is almost bell like but combined with the large amount of EQ it brilliantly made the bastion voice. When recording the voice I used a C414 microphone which I had learned was a great microphone to use for vocals in my recording and mixing class, and made random sounds into the microphone with some actual speaking as well. This allowed me to create the entire sound which is subtle but important.

Feedback

Once I’d done all this, I then got some help of my peers and my lecturer and got some critical feedback to see what they thought of my video and if there were any things they would change, I changed a few details and then my project was completed.
